Our analysis

AI-assisted

Collapsible Categories in the Dashboard is a WordPress plugin designed to improve the usability of the category selection interface when using the Classic Editor. It allows users to collapse groups of subcategories into expandable menus, making it easier to navigate long lists of categories. This functionality is especially useful for those managing a large number of post or WooCommerce product categories.

To use this plugin, you must have the Classic Editor plugin installed. It enhances the category selection experience by keeping checked categories visible while allowing others to be collapsed, thus streamlining the process of selecting categories.

Best for: This plugin is suitable for users who manage extensive category lists in WordPress using the Classic Editor.

What it does well

  • Collapses subcategories into expandable menus
  • Works with post and WooCommerce product categories
  • Enhances usability for long category lists
  • Requires Classic Editor plugin to function

Where it falls short

  • Only works with the Classic Editor plugin
  • Limited information on compatibility with custom taxonomies

Verdict

Collapsible Categories in the Dashboard offers a practical solution for navigating large category lists, but its reliance on the Classic Editor may limit its appeal.

From the developer

newvibe's own description of Collapsible Categories in the Dashboard, lightly tidied.

Must use Classic Editor plugin – Add to my list of gripes with Gutenberg that it uses the REST API to display the categories, adding nothing to the categories box for the user while rendering the wp_terms_checklist_args filter useless. If you don’t already use the Classic Editor plugin (installed more than 5 million times to date), you’ll have to use it for this plugin to work. I’m looking for a work-around…

Does your list of categories go on and on, making it difficult to scroll to and find what you need? This plugin will collapse groups of subcategories into expandable submenus, which you may open and close as needed, cutting your category list down to a manageable size. Submenus with checked categories are not collapsed (but are collapsible), so you won’t have to hunt for them.

Thanks to scribu for the code from his Category Checklist Tree plugin, which prevents the breaking of the category list heirarchy.

This plugin works with post categories and WooCommerce product categories too. According to users, it works with custom taxonomies!
