Our analysis

AI-assisted

Genesis Featured Images is a WordPress plugin that allows you to set a default image for post thumbnails and featured images. It provides a meta box to customize the size of the featured image displayed, ensuring that a fallback image appears when a post, page, or custom post type lacks a featured image or an image within the content.

This plugin is particularly useful for users who frequently write posts and prefer to have a consistent image for the majority of their content. It integrates with the Genesis framework and utilizes the WordPress Image Uploader to manage images effectively.

Best for: This plugin suits WordPress users who use the Genesis framework and want to standardize featured images across multiple posts.

What it does well

  • Creates a default image option for posts without featured images
  • Allows custom size settings for featured images
  • Filters genesis_get_image() for fallback options
  • Uses the WordPress Image Uploader and Library

Where it falls short

  • Requires Genesis framework to function
  • Last updated in September 2015, may not be compatible with newer WordPress versions
  • Limited information on support or updates

Verdict

Genesis Featured Images provides a straightforward solution for managing default images in Genesis-based sites, but its outdated status may be a concern for some users.

From the developer

Travis Smith's own description of Genesis Featured Images, lightly tidied.

Genesis Featured Images creates a option box to enable a default image for post thumbnails and/or featured images and a meta box to set a custom size for the featured image to be displayed. These default images will only appear any time a post, page or any custom post type does not have a featured image, or an image inside the post. So for those who write a lot of posts and want one image for the majority of your posts, this plugin works perfectly! Genesis Featured Images filters genesis_get_image() so anywhere you utilize genesis_get_image(), this plugin will provide a fallback option. Genesis Featured Images uses the WordPress Image Uploader and Library to upload the image to ensure that the proper thumbnails are created.
