Our analysis

AI-assisted

Proper Network Activation is a WordPress plugin designed for MultiSite installations. It addresses issues with network activation by ensuring that the activation and deactivation hooks of plugins are properly triggered across all sites in the network. This helps maintain functionality for plugins that require specific installation procedures beyond the current site.

This plugin is suitable for WordPress administrators managing a MultiSite setup who need to ensure that plugins work consistently across all sites. It automates the activation and deactivation processes to prevent errors in plugin functionality.

Best for: WordPress administrators managing a MultiSite network.

What it does well

  • Triggers de/activation hooks on all sites in the network
  • Ensures plugins function properly across all sites
  • Automates activation for new sites

Where it falls short

  • Last updated in March 2013, which may affect compatibility
  • Limited active installs may indicate low usage or support

Verdict

Proper Network Activation provides a solution for ensuring plugin functionality across a MultiSite network, but its age and limited user base may raise concerns for some users.

From the developer

scribu's own description of Proper Network Activation, lightly tidied.

When running WordPress MultiSite, you have a very handy feature called network activation. It allows you to activate a plugin for the entire network of sites. The trouble is that it only does half the job.

Some plugins have an install procedure that is meant to be run only on activation. However, when you do a network activation, that install procedure is only run for the current site. So, you end up with plugins not working properly on all the other sites.

What this plugin does:

  • when doing a network de/activation, it triggers the de/activation hook on all sites in the network
  • when creating a new site, it triggers the activation hook for all active network plugins on that site
