What a headline tool can honestly tell you

Length, word balance, whether it makes a concrete promise, and whether it will be cut off in search results. All of that is measurable.

What it cannot tell you is how many people will click. That depends on who is reading, where they see it, what it is competing against and when. A tool that outputs a predicted click-through rate from a string of text is inventing it.

What actually improves a headline

  • Be specific. "7 WordPress speed mistakes" beats "How to speed up your site".
  • Name the stake. Say what the reader gains or avoids.
  • Cut the filler. If a word can go without changing the meaning, it should.
  • Match the page. A headline that overpromises costs you more in trust than it earns in clicks.

Common questions

Can a tool predict how many clicks a headline gets?

No, and be sceptical of any that claims to. Clicks depend on the audience, the platform, the competition and timing. What can be measured is length, word balance and specificity — which is what this checks.

How long should a headline be?

Around 55 to 65 characters. That survives truncation in Google results while still being a complete thought.
